ANCHOR
Anchor is Spotify’s free podcasting platform—the easiest way to create, distribute, and monetize your show. It has built-in uploading, recording, and editing tools so you can easily create and publish episodes. Anchor also offers insightful and clear analytics from Spotify which I know will be helpful for quarter 3!
Founded in 2015, Anchor was initially thought of as a short-form social audio platform. Think of it like TikTok without the video.
By 2018, the company had shifted focus, becoming a platform for people to create and share podcasts. Spotify bought out the app in 2019, expanding its reach as the free platform of choice for the podcast-curious.

Pros:
Anchor does NOT own your podcast. You own the content and are free to put it anywhere you choose at any time.
Anchor has several other great features for podcasters, such as in-depth analytics, a sponsorship with no minimum listenership, and a website for your podcast and all other related social media links. Anchor also makes recording with friends as easy as possible in the app.
External equipment is supported when recording with Anchor.
If you record audio outside of Anchor, it is possible to upload your audio into your Anchor account.
It’s free! When you’re working out whether podcasting is something you want to commit to, free tools are an amazing way to test the waters.
It’s versatile! Anchor is different because it’s designed to be a podcast host but also a place to edit and create your show. Inside Anchor, you can drag and drop audio elements directly into your episode and if you’ve never worked with audio before this can make piecing together an episode way less daunting.
It makes it easy to get creative!
It makes it easy to integrate listeners into your show.
Anchor also supports adding links to your description. This is great for adding sources for things mentioned in the episode, as well as linking to all your other social media profiles. This will be synced to every other platform, including Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Pocket Casts, where all the links will remain clickable, and your formatting will remain the same.
Cons:
You don’t have much control over the finished product. Editing is really important because it’s the part of the process that ensures your audience hears the best version of your show. To edit well you need a decent amount of control over your audio file and from my experience, you don’t get that inside Anchor.
Recording on your phone isn’t a good idea. Anchor seems pretty keen to get people to record their podcasts on their phones. And while that’s convenient it’s not going to be great quality (unless you’ve got a decent microphone attached to your phone).
Your files are stored with a third party. As a content creator, you should always have your files stored on your own hard drive.
They can put ads in your content.
Anchor has stated that in 2020 alone, more than one million podcasters began their journey using the platform. Anchor makes starting your own podcast as easy as possible. Its easy-to-use podcasting tools give you the freedom to create whatever kind of show you want and make you feel like a professional podcaster after only a few episodes.
Why We Chose Anchor?
IT IS FREE.
For the most part, we have made the decision to use Anchor for our Spotify Audio Podcast since our group’s facilitator— Angelika Juanillo has a friend who has her very own Spotify podcast which she launched with the help of Anchor. Therefore, we can get guidance and help if ever we needed one from an experienced podcaster who is a very good friend of one of our members.
With the Anchor app, your listeners can record messages on their phone and it pops up inside your show account. Then you just drag and drop the messages into the audio of your show. That's a fantastic feature and one that makes a two-way conversation with your audience much easier.
Anchor provides a comprehensive guide to getting more loyal listeners for your podcast, tips for recording, editing, and adding some flair, tips for taking your show to the next level, articles on various subtopics of podcasting, and even anchor video tutorials!
Furthermore, what got us hooked on Anchor is that it had an article on why and how creators should target the Gen Z podcast audience—coincidentally, our target audience.
Anchor lets us edit our audio!
Anchor offers different features that make it easy to add musical interludes between content breaks, insert background music on our tracks or include the voices of our listeners.
Although we don't start podcasts with the sole intention of making money, it's incredibly exciting to see a few cents rack up from the listens your podcast initially gets. Who is the sponsor you get? Well, of course, it's Anchor itself; this is a win-win situation!
Anchor is incredibly user-friendly and at the same time has dozens of settings to customize your podcast experience.
Analytics. Our group has considered how great Anchor provides analytics as it is a great way to understand who is listening to our podcast and adapt our style and content to our listeners. Anchor also presents your top five episodes, which is great for understanding what your listeners have been most interested in. Other analytics include which countries our listeners are from, which podcast platform they use most, their age, as well as gender. Although other podcast hosting platforms may allow you to view more in-depth analytics, Anchor already does a fantastic job at presenting the most important audience demographics in the easiest and most visually appealing way possible.
Anchor is a fantastic place to start. It has all the features you need without it being overwhelming.
Anchor provides unlimited free hosting, and there doesn’t seem to be any sort of limitation on the size of the files that we can upload.
Finally, Anchor is indeed versatile and quite flexible, actually! It offers us every feature that our group has been looking for in a Spotify Podcast host, allows us to record from a phone, or a computer, or we can upload a recording from another device! Hence, it has strengthened our decision to utilise Anchor for Genzation’s upcoming Spotify podcast.
